Place of seclusion and meditation for the monks of the Order of Discalced Augustines until the beginning of the 19th century, the Convento da Orada impresses as soon as we see it, located next to Monsaraz, the Convento da Orada stands out on the Alentejo plain and dominates the entire fantastic landscape that surrounds you.
The Convento da Orada was built between 1700 and 1741, and its church is linked to the name of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, the Holy Constable.
I have never hidden my passion for monuments and their stories, I get goosebumps just thinking that the corridors I now walk through were once occupied by other people who made their lives in this space.
The Convento da Orada impresses on the outside with its size and whiteness, and on the inside with its church, cloister, corridors, rooms and bedrooms, which originally belonged to the mongs who inhabited the Convento da Orada, many of them with views of the Alentejo plain, as if inviting so to meditation and contemplation.
The archeology room at the Convento da Orada attests to the ancient occupation of this place and allows us to see and touch objects full of history and that in other times belonged to our ancestors. In the church we can close our eyes, and almost feel the energy of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, the Holy Constable who prayed here between his battles against the Castilians.
In 1988, the grandparents of Carolina Correia, the current director, acquired the Convento da Orada, continuing their common passion for built heritage. They then created the Convento da Orada Foundation, with the purpose of recovering the convent and promoting the safeguarding and rehabilitation of the architectural heritage.
Together, they embarked on the fantastic adventure of giving body and soul to this wonderful building, which tells us so many stories, from the Visigoths to D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, through the epics of D. Manuel I, to the Baroque of the 17th and 18th centuries.
They recovered the convent in the strictest observance of the historical legacy and the canons of rehabilitation of the architectural and landscape heritage, reborn its spirit and giving it a stage for the scientific, pedagogical, cultural, tourist, artistic, educational and social purposes by which the convent is governed foundation.
In addition to its rich history, the convent has 25 rooms available for guests, several meeting rooms that meet different needs, a games room, a living room, a library and a restaurant that serves fantastic meals, providing a complete and welcoming experience. A swimming pool will soon be available to provide even more comfort and leisure for guests. And, in the medium term, there are ambitious and exciting plans: the aim is to create a park with animals in the middle of nature, on the Convent’s edge.
This project aims to offer a unique experience of contact with nature and animals, further enriching visitors’ stay.
Very close to the fantastic village of Monsaraz, staying at Convento da Orada allows us to leisurely visit this museum village, which is one of the most beautiful villages in Portugal and carries history in every corner. You can also visit a megalithic complex right next to the convent, which is further proof of the very ancient history of this magical place.
The balloons that invade the skies of the Monsaraz plain depart from Convento da Orada as soon as the sun rises, and it’s yet another reason to stay in this magnificent place.
The Orada convent is not just a physical heritage; it is a legacy of love, faith and commitment to the community.
I confess that I fell in love with it from the first moment, and I feel at home there, as all the staff at the Convent make us feel like that, attentive, attentive and available, they make a stay at the Convent of Orada something memorable and This will never leave our hearts.
I will return, again and again, because a little of my heart remains here.
